In modern art history the concept of the 'black square' and 'white square' has epitomised the ideal in painting, and are seen by their creators as a point of perfection in art, containing no representation or expression of life, or the imagination. Devoid of colour they are seen as completely abstract entities. This work re-interprets the concept of the Black and White square paintings of modern art .
For the exhibition 'Infinite Human' the idea of the black square and the white square is applied to the 'body of work' series. Black and white symbolise the two extremes; of darkness, and of light. Between these two there are infinite possibilities. Black represents conception, the universe begins in darkness, and so does human life - in the dark void of the womb. White represents the other extremity, the end of life, stars like the sun which sustain life on earth become white dwarfs when all their energy is exhausted. The 'black square walk' and 'white square walk' show the human body, the vessel in which we experience the journey between life and death.
