This work was inspired by a childhood memory of living in a terrace house in an inner city. We had a patch of soil in the backyard, where we grew ‘methi’ (fenugreek). The sprouting plants would be covered over with my mother’s old sarees to protect the tender leaves from pests and night frosts.
For the SPARK children's art festival run by fellow artist Pasha Kincaid, children were invited to design an arts festival and I was selected by them to work with them alongside other local artists. I set up a seed sharing stall, where children and families could come and learn about which seeds they could grow, and take away origami seed parcels. Outdoors in an installation in the park next door I had re-created the visual memory of a patch of English garden protected by a worn saree.
Together with other artists who had made banners and placards and sound musician Dave leading the children's parade all holding their seeds on a procession around the park to arrive at the installation. Where I led a short meditation on seed planting and everyone took part in sowing seeds before taking away pots with the sown seeds home with them.
