a silent walk led by myself at Melin Glonc Artist Camp on World Listening Day July 18th , 2017
To mark this world listening day I observed a silent fast, which allowed me a rest from speaking, from projecting outwards. and turned my mind inwards and to a more sensitive awareness of the sounds around me. It created a space around me which opened up to listening, and I decided to share this space with others - on the threshold at Melin Glonc I chalked up an invitation to gather for a 'Silent Walk' at 6pm, As evening arrived a group of a dozen or so people had gathered to walk in silence. The walk took us from the quietude of the paths along the fields , over the river, through the cemetery and into Drefelin village.
The ambient sound during our walk was kindly recorded by Sound Artist Jacob Whittaker and can be listened to by following this link on soundcloud.
World Listening Day, is observed every 18th July each year marking the birth date of Canadian composer, music educator, and author, R. Murray Schafer. His World Soundscape Project developed the fundamental ideas and practices of acoustic ecology in the 1970s. These inform the current, burgeoning interest in our changing acoustic environment.
